Isonicotinic acid appears as small white crystalline flakes with a melting point of 319°C, sublimating at 260°C under 2 kPa. At 25°C, its dissociation constant K is 1.1×10⁵, and the pH of its saturated aqueous solution is 3.6. Below 20°C, 0.25 g of isonicotinic acid dissolves in 100 ml of water, with solubility increasing in hot water. It is nearly insoluble in benzene, diethyl ether, and ethanol. Methyl isonicotinate is an oily liquid with a melting point of 8.5°C and a boiling point of 104°C at 2.8 kPa; it decomposes partially at 209°C under 101.3 kPa. Ethyl isonicotinate is an ester-scented liquid that forms needle-like crystals when cooled with ice brine, with a melting point of 23°C. Its relative density d₁₅⁴ is 1.0091 (liquid). It boils at 78.5°C under 0.667 kPa, 110°C under 2 kPa, and 220°C under 101.3 kPa. It is soluble in diethyl ether, ethanol, chloroform, and benzene but nearly insoluble in water. Uses: Isonicotinic acid is primarily used in the preparation of isoniazid and its derivatives.
